What Are the Signs of a Clothes Moth Infestation?
How to Prevent Clothes Moths?
Preventing clothes moths is much easier than dealing with them. Get three things right — proper clothes storage, humidity control, and regular inspections — and clothes moths will hardly ever be a problem.
Store Clothes the Right Way
Out-of-season clothes must be washed and thoroughly dried before storage. Sweat and skin flakes attract clothes moths. Putting dirty clothes directly into storage is like setting out a welcome meal for them. Wool sweaters and cashmere scarves should go into breathable cotton bags first, then sealed bags or vacuum compression bags. Silk items are best stored rolled up with tissue paper between layers to prevent creasing from long-term pressure.
Environmental Control Is Key
Clothes moths thrive in damp, dark conditions, so they struggle in dry environments:
- Keep the wardrobe dry and ventilated. Open the doors regularly to let air circulate.
- Put dehumidifying boxes or desiccants in the wardrobe. Keep humidity below 50%.
- Don't overstuff the wardrobe. Leave some space for airflow.
- Avoid placing wardrobes against exterior walls to prevent moisture seepage from the wall.
- Place cedarwood chips or lavender sachets in wardrobe corners — they have some repellent effect.
Regular Inspections Catch Problems Early
Open the wardrobe every month or two for a check — especially corners and the bottom of stacked clothes piles. Late spring to early summer (April-June) is peak breeding season for clothes moths. Pay extra attention during this period. If you see adult moths crawling or fluttering, immediately track down the source. The earlier you catch them, the easier they are to handle. If you wait until the whole wardrobe is full of holes, it's a much bigger headache.
New Item Precautions
Used wool items from thrift stores, old blankets gifted by friends — inspect these separately at home first. Confirm they're pest-free before putting them in your wardrobe. Don't bring someone else's clothes moths into your home.
