How does food-grade diatomaceous earth kill drugstore beetles?

Food-grade diatomaceous earth is used primarily for environmental control of drugstore beetles in cabinets where herbs are stored.

Effectiveness against drugstore beetles

When adult and larval drugstore beetles crawl over the diatomaceous earth protective layer, the particles are absorbed through the body wall, disrupt the nervous system, and cause death within 24-48 hours. The physical barrier remains effective for a long time under dry conditions.

Application method

Step 1: Preparation

  • Remove all herbs from the cabinet.
  • Seal and discard infested herbs.
  • Keep temporarily uninfested herbs outside.

Step 2: Cleaning

  • Vacuum all powder and debris from inside the cabinet.
  • Focus on corners and seams.
  • Wipe cabinet walls with a damp cloth.
  • Allow to dry completely.

Step 3: Apply the powder

Evenly apply food-grade diatomaceous earth to:

  • All interior surfaces (back, sides, bottom).
  • Shelf seams and corners.
  • Drawer tracks and bottoms.
  • Door gaps and hinges.
  • Baseboards and surrounding corners.

Step 4: Allow to dry

  • Leave cabinet doors open for 1-2 hours.
  • Ensure the powder is completely dry.
  • The dried powder forms an invisible, odorless protective layer.

Step 5: Return herbs

  • Return sealed herbs to the cabinet.
  • Ensure all herbs are stored in airtight containers.

Important precautions

  • Never apply directly to herbs.
  • Remove all herbs before application.
  • Do not return any items until the powder is dry.
  • Herbs must be sealed before returning; otherwise, they will be re-infested.

Combine with airtight storage

Environmental treatment is only an auxiliary measure. The real protection against drugstore beetles comes from airtight storage. If herbs are sealed in jars, even if a few beetles remain in the environment, they cannot enter.
