How to eliminate drugstore beetles?

Eliminating drugstore beetles requires three steps: discard infested herbs, clean the environment, and seal for storage.

Step 1: Discard infested herbs

Seal and discard all infested herbs. Do not hesitate — herbs damaged by drugstore beetles:

  • Are hollowed out inside, with active ingredients lost.
  • Contain frass and larvae, making them unusable as medicine.
  • Will continue to spread to other foods.

Criteria: upon opening and inspecting, discard if you see any of the following — live insects, boreholes, powdery debris, or frass (tiny black particles). Do not try to salvage "clean" parts.

Step 2: Thoroughly clean storage areas

  1. Empty all storage drawers and cabinets.
  2. Vacuum all powder and debris from every corner.
  3. Pay special attention to crevices and hinges — larvae like to pupate there.
  4. Wipe interiors with a damp cloth dipped in white vinegar or diluted dish soap.
  5. Leave cabinet doors open to air dry completely.

Step 3: Apply insecticide

Apply food-grade diatomaceous earth for residual treatment:

  • Cabinet walls and shelf corners.
  • Drawer tracks and bottoms.
  • Door edges and hinges.
  • Baseboards and wall corners.

After application, leave doors open for 1-2 hours to allow the powder to dry completely before returning items. Avoid getting powder on herbs or utensils.

Step 4: Airtight storage

After cleaning, store all herbs in airtight containers:

  • Glass jars are preferred (transparent for easy inspection, good seal).
  • Freeze newly purchased herbs at -18°C for 48 hours before storing.
  • Valuable herbs (ginseng, American ginseng, etc.) can be stored directly in the refrigerator at 0-5°C.
  • Place a small food-grade desiccant pack inside the jar to keep dry.

Step 5: Regular inspection

  • Quickly check herbs every two weeks.
  • Look for new signs of damage or powder.
  • Act immediately if anything is found.

Preventing recurrence

Airtight storage is the most important measure. Drugstore beetle eggs are invisible to the naked eye, so you cannot rely on "looking clean." All opened herbs must be sealed; all newly purchased herbs must be frozen before storage. If you do both, recurrence is unlikely.
