How to remove scabies mites from sheets and duvet covers?

The most reliable method is heat treatment, as scabies mites and eggs die within minutes at high temperatures. Here are specific steps:

Method 1: Hot water wash + high-heat drying (most recommended)

  1. Remove all sheets, duvet covers, and pillowcases; place each in a plastic bag and tie tightly to prevent mite dispersal.
  2. Soak in water above 60°C for at least 10 minutes, then wash normally.
  3. After washing, tumble dry on the "high heat" setting (usually above 70°C) for 30-40 minutes.
  4. If your washer/dryer does not show temperatures, "hot to the touch" is sufficient.

Method 2: Sun exposure or ironing

  • Expose to strong sunlight for 4-6 hours, turning both sides. However, effectiveness depends on weather and season, making it less reliable than hot water washing.
  • Use a hot iron, especially on seams and folded edges. Iron temperatures reach above 100°C, killing surface mites.

Method 3: Sealed isolation

For non-washable bedding (e.g., cotton quilts, down duvets, mattresses):

  1. Place in large, sealed plastic bags.
  2. Expel as much air as possible and seal tightly.
  3. Leave sealed at room temperature for 7-14 days.
  4. Mites survive 2-3 days away from the host at room temperature; 7 days ensures all mites and eggs are dead.

Precautions

  1. Do not carry soiled bedding around the room; bag them before taking to the washing machine.
  2. After handling, wash hands and change clothes to avoid re-infestation.
  3. Vacuum the mattress surface thoroughly; seal and discard the vacuum bag.
  4. Combine with thorough vacuuming of the environment, hot water washing, and sealed isolation. Also treat bed slats and mattress seams as part of environmental management.
