How long can scabies mites survive away from the human body?
Survival time away from the host depends on environmental conditions. Knowing this is important for household disinfection:
Survival times under different conditions
- Room temperature (20-25°C) on bedding and clothing: about 2-3 days.
- Low temperature (10-15°C): can survive 5-7 days.
- High temperature and humidity (above 35°C): die quickly, usually within 24 hours.
- Dry environments: survive shorter than in humid conditions.
Implications for household disinfection
- Hot water washing — soak in water above 60°C for at least 10 minutes to kill mites and eggs.
- High-heat drying — run the dryer on high heat for over 30 minutes.
- Sealed isolation — seal clothing and bedding used by the patient in plastic bags for over 7 days before washing (mites cannot survive long away from the host).
- Environmental cleaning — vacuum sofas and mattresses thoroughly. Items that cannot be washed should also be sealed for over 7 days.
- Medical treatment — the fundamental treatment for scabies is medical permethrin cream (5% concentration, prescription required) or oral ivermectin. All close contacts should be treated simultaneously.
Note: Scabies mites lose activity after leaving the host. Focus on treating the patient's clothing and bedding; extensive whole-house disinfection is unnecessary.
