How to eliminate scabies mites from the bed?
Eliminating scabies mites from the bed is a critical step in scabies treatment. Because mites can survive on bedding for 2-3 days away from the host, failure to treat bedding properly can lead to reinfestation after treatment.
Step 1: Remove and wash bedding (most effective)
- Remove all washable fabric items: sheets, duvet covers, pillowcases, bed skirts, etc.
- Soak in water above 60°C for at least 10 minutes, then wash normally.
- After washing, tumble dry on high heat (above 70°C) for 30-40 minutes.
- If no dryer is available, use a hot iron.
Step 2: Treat the mattress and pillows
- Thoroughly vacuum the mattress surface, paying special attention to seams, edges, and label stitching.
- Vacuum pillows thoroughly as well.
- For non-washable pillows and duvet cores—place in large, sealed plastic bags, tie tightly, and leave for 1-2 weeks (mites cannot survive long without a host).
Step 3: Treat the bed frame
- Vacuum bed slats, joints, and the backs of nightstands.
- For non-washable mattresses, use an anti-mite encasement to prevent mites from hiding inside.
- Seal and discard the vacuum bag to avoid re-dispersal.
Step 4: Post-treatment protection
- Change sheets and pillowcases daily during treatment.
- Wash soiled bedding immediately in hot water; do not leave them in the room.
- After treatment ends, wash all bedding one final time.
- Critical: Scabies requires medical treatment. Medical permethrin cream (5%) is the WHO-recommended first-line treatment and must be applied to the entire body. Environmental measures are only auxiliary and cannot replace medical treatment.
Precautions
- Water temperature must reach at least 60°C to be effective (mites die in 10 minutes at 50°C).
- Dryer heat is more reliable than sun exposure (weather-independent).
- Seal and discard the vacuum bag after use.
