What to do if a stink bug flies into the house?

When a stink bug flies indoors, do not swat it with a fly swatter or slipper. Striking it releases an extremely foul odor that can linger for days and stains walls and curtains.

Correct handling steps

  1. Gently cover it — use a paper cup or plastic cup to gently cover the stink bug; move slowly to avoid startling it.
  2. Slide paper under — slide a piece of stiff paper or a business card between the cup and the wall, trapping the insect inside.
  3. Take it outside — carry the covered cup outdoors and gently release the bug.
  4. Water drowning method — if you want to kill it, submerge the sealed cup in soapy water to drown it.

Alternative methods

  • Vacuum method — use a vacuum to suck up the stink bug, but clean the vacuum bag immediately, or the odor will linger in the vacuum.
  • Soapy water spray — spray the stink bug directly with soapy water from a spray bottle; the soap clogs its breathing pores and it dies within minutes. Be careful not to spray on walls.
  • Tape method — use wide tape to trap the stink bug, then fold and discard.

What if the odor has already been released?

  • Immediately open windows for ventilation; the odor usually dissipates within hours.
  • The main components of stink bug defensive fluid are aldehydes like trans-2-decenal; they will gradually dissipate.
  • Wipe contaminated surfaces with white vinegar to neutralize the odor.
  • If the liquid gets on hands, wash with soap and white vinegar.
  • For curtains or clothing stained by the liquid, soak in water with white vinegar before washing.

Preventing re-entry

Spray dinotefuran-containing household insecticide around window and door frames to form a protective band. Stink bugs that land on treated surfaces will die from contact poisoning and will not have a chance to release their odor indoors.

Important reminder

Although stink bug defensive fluid is foul-smelling, it is not toxic to humans and causes no real harm. Stay calm and use the methods above. Stink bugs entering in late autumn are seeking overwintering sites. Releasing them outside will only lead them to find another crevice, so sealing gaps is more fundamental than catching them.
