How to prevent bethylid wasps from entering the house?

Preventing wasps from entering the house focuses on blocking their flight routes and eliminating the host sources that attract them.

Physical barriers

  • Install fine-mesh screens (40 mesh or finer) — wasps are small, and ordinary screen mesh may not block them.
  • Check screens for holes and repair promptly.
  • Keep door bottom gaps within 5 mm.
  • Seal air conditioner pipe entries and exhaust fan openings with expanding foam.

Eliminate host sources

Bethylid wasps are attracted by wood-boring insects; eliminating borers is the fundamental way to prevent wasps:

  • Inspect new wooden furniture for holes and wood powder before bringing it in.
  • Inspect construction lumber before use.
  • Do not store scrap wood or cardboard boxes indoors long-term.
  • If old furniture shows signs of borer damage, treat or discard it promptly.

Yard management

  • Dispose of dead pine trees and diseased trees in the yard promptly.
  • Do not stack firewood against exterior walls; keep it at least 1 meter away from the house.
  • Regularly check wooden fences and trellises for borer damage.
  • If nearby pine trees show extensive dieback, report it to the forestry department.

Chemical prevention

Spray dinotefuran-containing household insecticide on door and window frames and screens to form a film; wasps that fly onto it die. Residual effect lasts 2-4 weeks, making it an effective prevention method.
