How to eliminate bethylid wasps indoors?
The key to eliminating indoor bethylid wasps is to find their source, as their presence indoors usually indicates wood-boring insect infestation in wooden items.
Physical removal (for small numbers)
- Use an electric fly swatter to kill them directly — safe and efficient.
- Vacuum them up; seal the vacuum bag before discarding.
- Sweep them into a dustpan and flush down the toilet.
- Do not swat with your hands — they have stingers.
Find the source
If bethylid wasps repeatedly appear in a certain area, it means there is a host for their parasitism there. Focus on checking:
- Wooden furniture — check for small round holes and fresh wood shavings around them.
- Door and window frames — look for signs of wood-boring insect activity.
- Wooden flooring — especially near walls and baseboards.
- Stored wood or cardboard boxes — these may carry wood-boring insects.
Chemical control
- After finding the wasps' flight paths, spray dinotefuran-containing household insecticide around windows and door frames to form a protective barrier.
- Dinotefuran spray is effective against bethylid wasps; they die upon contact with the film.
- If a specific wooden item is confirmed to have borers, inject dinotefuran into the boreholes to kill the borers; the wasps will disappear once their host is gone.
- Wasps die within hours of contacting the film; direct spraying kills faster.
Prevention
Install screens to prevent wasps from flying in. Do not stack firewood or lumber against exterior walls to reduce wood-boring insect breeding. Check new wooden furniture for signs of borers before bringing it indoors.
