How to clean drains to prevent shore flies?

Drains are the primary indoor breeding site for shore flies, because the inner walls of drainpipes accumulate grease, hair, and grime, combined with damp conditions, providing ideal conditions for shore fly larvae.

Drain cleaning steps

  1. Use a long-handled brush or pipe brush to scrub the inner walls of the drain, removing accumulated grime and sludge.
  2. Pour a pot of boiling water (at least 90°C) slowly down the drain; high heat kills remaining eggs and larvae.
  3. Wipe dry the water around the drain opening.
  4. Spray dinotefuran-containing household insecticide around the drain opening, on the cover edges, and on surrounding floors; once dry, it forms a film.
  5. Shore flies emerging or crawling over the film die upon contact.

Daily prevention

  • After each use, rinse the sink drain with hot water to prevent grease buildup.
  • Install strainers to catch food debris and hair.
  • Flush drains with boiling water weekly as routine maintenance.
  • Keep the area around drains dry.

After cleaning drains, maintain overall dryness and ventilation in bathrooms and kitchens, and the shore fly problem will be completely resolved.
