How to deal with carpet beetles in carpets?
Carpets are a major hotspot for carpet beetle larvae because carpet fibers accumulate skin flakes, hair, and food debris — all food sources for carpet beetles.
Step 1: Thorough vacuuming
Vacuum the carpet repeatedly, paying special attention to:
- Carpet edges and corners (where debris accumulates most).
- Gaps between the carpet and baseboards.
- Carpet areas under furniture.
Immediately discard the vacuum bag (or empty the canister) after vacuuming, otherwise eggs may hatch inside the vacuum.
Step 2: Spray insecticide
Spray dinotefuran-containing household insecticide evenly on the carpet surface and surrounding baseboards:
- Once dry, the insecticide forms a film on carpet fibers.
- Larvae crawling on the carpet contact the film and die.
- Spray lightly — slightly damp is sufficient.
Step 3: Sun exposure
If the carpet is not too heavy:
- Roll up the carpet and take it to the balcony or outdoors.
- Expose to direct sunlight for several hours while beating it vigorously.
- Heat and UV light kill larvae and eggs.
- Vacuum again after sun exposure.
Step 4: Ongoing prevention
- Vacuum regularly, especially if you have pets.
- Do not let food debris or pet hair accumulate under carpets.
- Reapply dinotefuran-containing insecticide along carpet edges every six months.
- If the carpet is old and repeatedly infested, consider replacing it.
Note
If new damage continues to appear after treatment, there may be cracks in the floor beneath the carpet where larvae can come up from below. Lift the carpet, check, and treat the area.
