What to do if carpet beetles are found on the bed?
Finding carpet beetle larvae on the bed is unpleasant, but following these steps will eliminate them.
Step 1: Remove and wash bedding
Remove all sheets, duvet covers, and pillowcases:
- Wash in water above 60°C (high heat kills larvae and eggs).
- If hot water is unavailable, tumble dry on high heat for more than 30 minutes.
- Do not shake bedding before washing, to prevent eggs and hairs from scattering.
Step 2: Vacuum the mattress
Use a vacuum cleaner (preferably with HEPA filter) to thoroughly vacuum the mattress:
- Vacuum both sides.
- Focus on seams and edge crevices.
- If there are stains or food residue marks on the mattress, wipe clean with a damp cloth before vacuuming.
Step 3: Check under the bed and bed frame
- Check for food debris and pet hair accumulation under the bed.
- Spray dinotefuran-containing household insecticide in bed frame crevices and behind the headboard.
- Once dry, the film kills larvae that crawl over it.
Step 4: Trace the source
Carpet beetle larvae do not appear on the bed for no reason:
- Check wardrobes for sources (fur/wool items may be infested).
- Check where pets sleep.
- Check nearby carpets for infestation.
Step 5: Maintain prevention
Keep the bedroom clean and dry; do not eat snacks or store food in the bedroom. Vacuum regularly, especially carpets, under beds, and corners.
