How to Get Rid of Carpet Beetles in Wool Rugs
Are Carpet Beetle Larvae the Same as Caterpillars?
Carpet beetle larvae and caterpillars may look similar, but they're completely different insects.
Different Classification
- Caterpillars are the larvae of Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths).
- Carpet beetle larvae are the larvae of Coleoptera (beetles) — baby carpet beetles.
Appearance Differences
| Feature | Carpet Beetle Larva | Caterpillar |
|------|---------|-------|
| Body shape | Spindle-shaped, tapered at both ends | Elongated cylinder, uniform width |
| Body hair | Short, dense bristles, dark (brown/dark brown) | Long, sparse hairs, various colors |
| Defensive reaction | Curls into a ball and plays dead | Curls up or crawls away quickly |
| Size | 3-5mm, fairly small | Usually 1-5cm, larger |
| Number of legs | 3 pairs of thoracic legs | 3 pairs of thoracic legs + 2-5 pairs of prolegs |
Different Diets
- Carpet beetle larva: Eats animal protein (wool, fur, dried meat, specimens, etc.). Prefers dark, dry environments.
- Caterpillar: Eats fresh plant leaves. Lives on trees, shrubs, and plants.
Different Habitats
- Carpet beetle larva: In wardrobes, carpets, storage cabinets, wall corners, and crevices.
- Caterpillar: On plant leaves and branches.
Where Will You Find Them at Home?
If you see a small brown, fuzzy, worm-like creature crawling on the wall in the wardrobe, carpet, or storage room, it's almost certainly a carpet beetle larva looking for a place to pupate. If you see a large green caterpillar munching leaves on your balcony plants or outdoor trees, that's the real caterpillar.
The Simplest Way to Tell
Look at where it is — carpet beetle larvae crawl around inside the house; caterpillars crawl on plants. You're obviously not going to find a leaf-eating caterpillar in your wardrobe.
