How to Get Rid of Rice Weevil Eggs?

How to Kill Rice Weevil Eggs

Rice weevil eggs are laid inside the grains — invisible to the naked eye. Regular picking and rinsing can't kill them. You have to use physical methods to get rid of them completely.

Method 1: Freezing (Most Recommended)

Portion the rice into sealed freezer bags (not the original packaging — it tears easily) and lay them flat in the freezer:

  • Freeze at -18 degrees C (0 degrees F) or below for at least 48 hours.
  • Low temperature kills eggs, larvae, and adults.
  • After removing from the freezer, don't open the bag right away. Let it come back to room temperature first.
  • Condensation may form on the inside of the bag during warming — wipe it dry before storage.
  • Freezing does not affect the taste or nutritional value of the rice.

Method 2: Heat Treatment

  • Spread rice on a baking sheet and heat in the oven at 60-70 degrees C (140-158 degrees F) for 30 minutes.
  • Or microwave on high for 3-5 minutes (in small batches — don't overload).
  • High heat kills eggs and larvae.
  • But high heat can affect the texture and moisture content of the rice. Freezing is more convenient.

Method 3: Sun Exposure

  • Spread the rice in a thin layer in direct sunlight for 4-6 hours.
  • Adult weevils will escape, but eggs and larvae inside the grains may not be killed.
  • Sun exposure dries out the grains, which may affect cooked texture.
  • So sun exposure is less thorough than freezing.

Method 4: Modified Atmosphere (Requires Equipment)

Not practical for most households. Requires a vacuum sealer to remove air from the bag, or nitrogen flushing. Weevil eggs can't survive in an oxygen-free environment.

Prevent Eggs From Entering Your Home

The most practical approach: freeze newly purchased rice for 48 hours before pouring it into your rice container. It's an extra step, but it guarantees that any eggs present won't hatch in your pantry.
