How to Store Grain to Prevent Weevil Infestation
How to Get Rid of Rice Weevils Completely
Don't panic if you find rice weevils in your rice. The methods below effectively remove them.
Method 1: Freezing (Most Recommended)
Put the whole bag or container of rice in the freezer at -18 degrees C (0 degrees F) or below for at least 48 hours:
- Low temperatures kill adult weevils, larvae, and eggs.
- Once you take it out, all the bugs inside are dead.
- When you rinse the rice, dead bugs and remains will float to the surface — just wash them away.
- This method doesn't affect the quality or taste of the rice.
Method 2: Sun Exposure
Spread the rice on a clean cloth or bamboo mat in direct sunlight for 4-6 hours:
- The heat makes weevils crawl away or die.
- Turn the rice every hour while it's in the sun.
- After sunning, gather the rice and sift out dead bugs and debris.
- Note: Sun exposure does cause some moisture loss, so the cooked texture may be slightly different.
Method 3: Sifting
Run the rice through a fine-mesh sieve:
- Rice weevils are smaller than rice grains and will fall through the mesh.
- After sifting, pick out any obviously damaged grains.
- This method does NOT remove larvae and eggs hidden inside the grains.
- It works best when combined with freezing.
Method 4: Sichuan Peppercorn / Garlic Repellent
Place a few cloves of garlic or a small sachet of Sichuan peppercorns in the rice container:
- The pungent smell of garlic and peppercorns has some repellent effect on rice weevils.
- But it only drives them away — it doesn't kill them.
- This is useful as a preventive measure, not a cure.
When Rinsing
Regardless of which method you used, rinse the rice several times before cooking:
- Dead bugs and infested grains will float to the surface.
- Pour off everything that floats.
- Take a close look and remove any visibly infested grains.
Note
If weevils have multiplied extensively and there are lots of webs and droppings in the rice, we recommend you discard it rather than trying to salvage it.
