How does diatomaceous earth eliminate rice weevils?
How does diatomaceous earth eliminate rice weevils?
Diatomaceous earth can kill rice weevils, but it is not recommended to apply it directly to grain. It is mainly used for environmental control as an important measure to prevent recurrence after cleaning.
Effectiveness against rice weevils
When rice weevils contact the diatomaceous earth protective layer, the particles penetrate through the epidermis of their legs and abdomen, act on the nervous system, block nerve signal transmission, and cause paralysis and death. Effects are seen within hours of contact.
Correct application method
- Empty cabinets — remove all grains and dry goods from cabinets.
- Thorough vacuuming — vacuum all debris, rice fragments, and dust from cabinet crevices.
- Apply diatomaceous earth — dust the powder in cabinet corners, shelf seams, door edges, and drawer slides.
- Allow to dry and return food — ventilate for 30 minutes to 1 hour; after the protective layer is dry, return food.
- Airtight storage — store treated food in airtight containers or sealed bags before returning.
Precautions
- Never apply directly to rice or flour.
- Apply only to cabinet interior surfaces; the dried layer is colorless and odorless.
- The protective layer lasts about 2-4 weeks; any weevils crawling over it will die.
- You may also dust the outside of rice bins to prevent weevils from climbing in.
- Wear gloves and a mask during application; ensure ventilation.
Combining with other methods for better results
Diatomaceous earth environmental application + airtight storage + freezing treatment is currently the most effective household combination for rice weevil control.
