How to find the source of Indianmeal moth infestation?
How to find the source of Indianmeal moth infestation?
Finding the source is key to complete elimination. Since adult moths can fly, there may be more than one source.
Method 1: Follow the adults
When you see small moths flying, observe their flight path:
- Adult moths usually do not stray far from food sources.
- Watch which cabinet door or wall they frequently land on.
- Carefully search storage cabinets nearby.
- Focus on recently opened food items.
Method 2: Follow the webbing
Larvae produce silk; webbing is the most direct clue to the source:
- Open storage cabinets and look for white webbing.
- Check the seals of flour and rice bags.
- Look for thread-like material in corners and on top of cabinets.
- Check folded edges of packaging for white cocoons.
Method 3: Key areas to inspect
The following areas are hotspots for infestations:
- Dry goods that have been stored for a long time.
- Opened, unsealed food items.
- Deep corners of cabinets.
- Bottoms of rice bins and flour bags.
- Pet food storage areas.
- Gift boxes (dried fruits, nuts, dates, etc.) received during holidays.
Method 4: Check pupation sites
Mature larvae wander before pupating, seeking safe locations:
- Cabinet door edges and hinges.
- Gaps at the top of cabinets.
- Crevices between walls and cabinets.
- Undersides of wall-mounted cabinets.
- Under labels and stickers.
What to do after finding the source
- The food item with the most webbing is likely the main nest.
- Do not open it for inspection—seal the entire package and discard it.
- Opening it indoors can spread adults and larvae.
- After discarding, check other nearby foods for spread.
What if you cannot find the source?
If a thorough search yields no clear source, it may be:
- A very small, early-stage infestation.
- Hidden in an unexpected place.
- Adult moths that flew in but have not yet laid eggs.
In this case, seal all dry goods in airtight containers, apply diatomaceous earth to cabinets, and observe for a week. If no new moths appear, the situation is under control.
