Are pyrethroid insecticides effective against gamasid mites?

Pyrethroid insecticides (such as deltamethrin) have contact-killing effects on gamasid mites. Mites have thinner cuticles compared to beetles with hard shells, making it easier for the insecticide to penetrate. Additionally, because they crawl close to the ground and walls, their abdomens and legs make extensive contact with treated surfaces, leading to efficient uptake.

Why use pyrethroids?

Gamasid mites belong to the class Arachnida. Their nervous system's nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) structure differs from insects—this is the primary target of neonicotinoid insecticides (like dinotefuran, imidacloprid). Pyrethroid insecticides act on sodium channels, making them more effective against arachnids and the recommended choice for environmental control of gamasid mites.

Usage method

  1. Apply after rat control — This is the most important prerequisite. Eliminate rats first, then spray. Mites' main hosts are rats; if rats remain, new mites will continuously be introduced, and spraying will only provide temporary relief.
  2. Key spraying areas:
  • Routes where rats were active—wall bases, baseboards, along pipes.
  • Around rat nests—inside wall voids, ceiling entries, attic floors.
  • Under kitchen cabinets, behind refrigerators.
  • Corners of storage rooms, stacks of cardboard boxes.
  • Areas where pets frequently stay.
  1. Application method:
  • Spray evenly until the surface is slightly damp.
  • Treat cracks and corners carefully.
  • The dried insecticide forms an invisible film effective for 2-4 weeks.

Timing of application

  • Spray immediately after rat control—at this time, mites are hostless and wandering, so contact with the treated surface is most likely.
  • Spray when mite bites are detected—to reduce further bites.

Precautions

  1. Cover food, utensils, and pet bowls before spraying.
  2. Close doors and windows for 2 hours after spraying, then ventilate.
  3. Allow 1 hour of ventilation before letting people and pets re-enter.
  4. Once dry, it is safe for humans and pets.

Important reminder

Pyrethroid insecticides can kill environmental mites, but they cannot prevent rats from bringing new ones in. The most fundamental measure is rat prevention: seal all possible rat holes, remove food sources that attract rats, and keep the indoor environment clean.
