What is the difference between gamasid mites and scabies mites?

Although their names are similar and both are "mites," they are completely different species, with very different modes of harm and treatment approaches.

Body size

  • Gamasid mites: Relatively large, about 0.5-1.5 mm (visible to the naked eye as tiny black dots moving).
  • Scabies mites (Sarcoptes): Extremely small, about 0.2-0.5 mm (barely visible as a white speck; needs magnification).

Habitat

  • Gamasid mites: Mainly in rat nests and along rat trails; do not burrow into skin; feed on the skin surface.
  • Scabies mites: Burrow into the human stratum corneum, digging tunnels, laying eggs, and living there.

Feeding method

  • Gamasid mites: Feed on blood at the skin surface of the host, then leave; do not stay on the skin for long.
  • Scabies mites: Female mites burrow into the stratum corneum, digging tunnels and laying eggs as they go; they live long-term within the skin.

Symptoms caused

  • Gamasid mite bites: Red papules, intense itching, but no tunnels; not transmissible to others. Bites mainly occur on areas exposed to rats (wrists, ankles, etc.).
  • Scabies: Characteristic severe nighttime itching, grey-white tunnels on finger webs and wrists, and a specific distribution of rashes. Highly contagious among family members.

Relationship with humans

  • Gamasid mites: Accidental parasites; rats are the main hosts; humans are bitten but are not suitable hosts.
  • Scabies mites: Humans are the main host; they are fully adapted to living in human skin.

Treatment approaches

  • Gamasid mites: Core is rat control + environmental spraying of deltamethrin. No skin treatment needed.
  • Scabies mites: Core is medical treatment (scabicide creams) + hot water treatment of clothing and bedding. Environmental spraying of deltamethrin is only auxiliary.

Easy memory

"Gamasids crawl on the floor, scabies burrow in the skin. Gamasids follow rats; for scabies, see a doctor."
