How to clean chicken coops and pigeon lofts to prevent gamasid mites?
Chicken coops and pigeon lofts are prime attractants for rats and gamasid mites. Regular, proper cleaning is key to preventing mite infestation.
Cleaning frequency
- Clean coops and lofts at least once a week.
- Remove manure and food debris daily—do not let them accumulate.
- Replace nesting material monthly.
- Perform a thorough deep cleaning in spring and autumn each year.
Cleaning steps
- Remove birds — Move poultry or pigeons to a temporary safe place before cleaning.
- Empty bedding — Remove all old bedding (straw, wood shavings, newspaper, etc.), bag and discard.
- Thorough sweeping — Sweep away manure and debris from inside and outside nest boxes, perches, and floors.
- High-pressure rinse — Rinse the entire loft/coop with a hose or pressure washer, especially corners and crevices.
- Apply insecticide — After drying, spray crevices of nest boxes, perch joints, and corners with household hygiene insecticide containing deltamethrin.
- Lay new bedding — After the insecticide is dry, add clean bedding.
- Return birds — Put the poultry back only after all treatment is complete.
Preventive measures
- Do not pile clutter around coops and lofts, which gives rats hiding places.
- Store feed in sealed containers to prevent rat access.
- Regularly check for holes in the structure and repair promptly.
- Place desiccants (like quicklime) around the coop to keep the area dry.
- Treat new bedding by sun exposure or insecticide before use.
Special reminder
Mites in chicken coops and pigeon lofts not only bite birds but may also crawl along walls into living areas. Regular cleaning protects both your poultry and your family.
