How to prevent bed bug recurrence?
Once bed bugs have been completely eliminated, the following preventive measures can effectively prevent recurrence. Prevention is much easier than treatment; good habits keep bed bugs away.
Home environment management
- Keep bedrooms tidy — reduce clutter to eliminate hiding places.
- Install interceptor cups or apply petroleum jelly under bed legs to prevent bed bugs from climbing up.
- Use bed bug-proof mattress encasements to fully seal the mattress.
- Vacuum weekly, especially around the bed, baseboards, and under furniture.
- Maintain preventive spraying — regularly apply dinotefuran-containing household insecticide to key areas such as near bed legs and baseboards. Bed bugs that approach will contact the residue and die.
Preventing introduction from outside
- Second-hand furniture inspection — before bringing second-hand furniture (especially beds, sofas, and nightstands) into the home, carefully inspect all crevices. It is best to spray with dinotefuran-containing insecticide before bringing it indoors.
- Hotel stay protection — inspect the mattress and headboard upon hotel check-in; do not place luggage on the bed or carpet; wash and dry clothes immediately upon returning home.
- Post-trip treatment — clean luggage inside and out, preferably wiping the interior with alcohol; put clothes directly in the washing machine.
- If neighbors have bed bugs — seal wall cracks and gaps around pipes to prevent bed bugs from migrating from next door.
Early warning
Install bed bug monitors or place double-sided tape under bed legs; check regularly for trapped bed bugs. Early detection and treatment are much easier than dealing with a large outbreak.
