How to prevent flies in the kitchen?

The kitchen is the most vulnerable area for fly entry and breeding because it has three major attractants: food, water, and garbage. Effective fly prevention in the kitchen requires attention to the following areas:

Food management

  1. Cover cooked food with food covers or store in the refrigerator.
  2. Wrap cut fruit in plastic wrap and refrigerate.
  3. Close lids on seasoning bottles and oil containers after use.
  4. Store ready-to-eat foods like bread and pastries in sealed containers.

Sink and countertops

  1. Do not leave dirty dishes in the sink overnight; wash them promptly.
  2. Use strainers in sink drains to catch food debris.
  3. Wipe countertops, stovetops, and walls daily to remove grease and food particles.
  4. Wash and dry dishcloths; damp cloths also attract flies.

Waste management

  1. Kitchen garbage bins must have lids.
  2. Dispose of kitchen waste daily; twice daily in summer.
  3. Scrub the bottom of garbage bins regularly to remove leaked liquids.
  4. Ensure garbage bags fully cover the rim of the bin.

Auxiliary chemical protection

Spray dinotefuran-containing household insecticide on kitchen window screens, door frames, and garbage bin lids where flies tend to land. Once dry, it forms an invisible film; flies that land on it die. Avoid spraying on food, utensils, or ingredients.
