How to prevent sandflies from entering the house?

Sandflies are small and weak fliers but can pass through ordinary screens. Preventing them from entering requires both physical barriers and chemical protection.

Physical barriers

  • Install fine-mesh screens on doors and windows (at least 40 mesh). Ordinary screens cannot block them.
  • Close windows before dusk, as sandflies are most active at dusk and night.
  • Install weather stripping under doors to seal gaps.
  • Check air conditioner pipes and exhaust fan openings; cover with fine mesh if necessary.

Yard environmental management

  • Do not pile loose soil or weeds in the yard; keep the ground clean and dry.
  • Regularly clean chicken coops, pigeon lofts, and livestock sheds; remove manure and damp bedding.
  • Fill in low-lying areas with standing water; clear drainage ditches.
  • Increase yard cleaning frequency during sandfly season (May-September).

Chemical protection

  • Apply residual sprays containing deltamethrin on indoor corners, behind curtains, and around window frames.
  • Once dry, it forms an invisible film; sandflies that enter and land on treated surfaces will die from contact poisoning.
  • Lasts 2-4 weeks, significantly reducing indoor sandfly populations.
  • Also spray yard walls and exterior window/door frames to create an outdoor protective barrier.

Sandflies are weak fliers. Daily maintenance of sealed screens and wall spraying can effectively prevent them from entering the house.
