Phorid Flies Control & Removal Guide

(Scuttle flies, Humpback flies, Coffin flies)

*Megaselia scalaris* / Phoridae

How They Get In

  1. Kitchen waste left unemptied breeds flies on-site.
  2. Organic sludge in drains, floor drains, and sewer pipes breeds flies that emerge from drain openings.
  3. Rotting fruit and expired food carry eggs; larvae emerge within days.
  4. Hallway garbage rooms and common trash chutes are continuous fly sources.

How to Get Rid of Them

  1. Pre-Treatment: Seal and discard kitchen waste. Empty trash cans. Wash cans with hot water and detergent. Wipe kitchen counters and floors dry. Remove food and dishes.;
  2. Key Zones: Trash can interiors and exteriors (thorough coverage), kitchen sink drain openings, floor drains, cabinet bottom crevices, dark kitchen corners.;
  3. Application: Spray trash can interiors from top to bottom. Spray into drain openings for several seconds. Spray cabinet bottom crevices. Never on dishes or food. Close kitchen door for 30 minutes to 1 hour.;
  4. Post-Treatment: Ventilate 30+ minutes. Core prevention is ongoing sanitation: daily trash removal, weekly trash can cleaning, monthly drain flushing.;
  5. Prevention: Use lidded trash cans for kitchen waste, empty daily. Quickly consume or refrigerate produce; discard rotten parts. Regularly clean under refrigerators and in cabinet bottoms.

Prevention & Follow-Up

Take kitchen trash out every day and always use a trash can with a tight-fitting lid. Double-bag your trash so nothing leaks through; wash the can with hot water and cleaner once a week. Keep kitchen counters and the sink clean and dry—wipe up crumbs and food scraps immediately. Check under the refrigerator and lower cabinets regularly for hidden bits of food debris.
