Rice Weevils Control & Removal Guide

(Snout weevil, Grain weevil, Maize weevil)

*Sitophilus oryzae* / *Sitophilus zeamais*

How They Get In

  1. Bulk rice and grains from stores carry eggs inside kernels, invisible externally.
  2. Residual eggs in old rice bins cross-contaminate new grain.
  3. Unsealed grain allows adult weevils to fly in from crevices.
  4. Grain pests from hallways crawl through gaps into kitchens.

How to Get Rid of Them

  1. Pre-Treatment: Discard heavily infested grain. Transfer sound grain to sealed containers. Vacuum cabinet interiors.;
  2. Key Zones: Cabinet joints, rice container exteriors, storage corners, baseboards.;
  3. Application: Spray cabinet joints in lines. Never spray on grain.;
  4. Post-Treatment: Close cabinets 1-2 hours, ventilate. Freeze infested grain at -18 C for 48 hours.;
  5. Prevention: Buy small quantities, use sealed containers, keep new and old separate, inspect monthly.

Prevention & Follow-Up

Buy grains in small amounts and restock more often. In summer, don't buy more than two weeks' worth at a time. Transfer all rice, flour, and miscellaneous grains into sealed glass jars or airtight rice bins right after purchase — never store them in open containers or cardboard boxes. Place food-grade silica gel desiccant packs in your pantry to keep the storage area dry. Check your grains regularly; if you find adult weevils or damaged kernels, isolate and throw them away immediately. Store new grains and old grains in separate containers to prevent cross-infestation.
