Norway Rats Control & Removal Guide

(Brown rat, Sewer rat, Wharf rat)

*Rattus norvegicus*

How They Get In

  1. Foundation entry: they burrow through foundation cracks and holes — Norway rats can enter through 12-18mm gaps.
  2. Sewer systems: urban sewers are their primary habitat and highway; they enter through drain and sewer pipes.
  3. Riverbanks and drainage ditches near buildings increase invasion risk.
  4. Open garbage and compost attract them to forage and nest.

How to Get Rid of Them

  1. Seal Foundation Entries: Stuff steel wool and cement into all foundation cracks and holes (Norway rats enter gaps over 12mm). Inspect basement windows, vents, and pipe penetrations. Repair broken sewer covers and drain pipe joints.;
  2. Sanitation Management: Store food and pet food in sealed containers. Remove garbage promptly; use lidded trash cans. Never pour kitchen grease or food waste down drains. Trim vegetation away from buildings; clear yard debris and wood piles.;
  3. Physical and Chemical Control: Place heavy-duty snap traps along rat runs with high-aroma baits. Deploy bait stations with anticoagulant rodenticides (bromadiolone, brodifacoum) at ground level and low areas. NEVER place exposed poison baits where children or pets can access them.;
  4. Sewer and Pipe Treatment: Inspect and repair broken drain and sewer pipes. Install rat-proof grates on floor drains and drain openings.;
  5. Professional Control: Norway rats are large, fast-breeding, and aggressive — DIY control is challenging. For serious infestations, contact a licensed PCO for systematic inspection and treatment, including perimeter bait station deployment and sewer fumigation.

Prevention & Follow-Up

Seal cracks in your building's foundation and around sewer pipe connections. Use trash cans with tight-fitting lids and never pour grease down the drain. Set heavy-duty snap traps and anticoagulant bait stations at ground level. Inspect and repair any damaged drain pipes and floor drain grates.
