How to prevent cockroaches in the kitchen?
The kitchen is the cockroaches' main cafeteria; the first rule of prevention is to control food and garbage. With a food supply, cockroaches can reproduce rapidly.
Food management
- Store cooked food and seasonings in sealed containers; do not leave them open. Cockroaches can chew through cardboard and plastic bags; glass or hard plastic containers are safer.
- Wash dishes immediately after meals; wipe stovetops and sinks clean of grease.
- Keep garbage bins covered; do not leave kitchen waste overnight — dispose of it daily.
- Do not leave pet food on the floor for too long; remove it promptly after feeding.
- Cockroaches can survive up to a month without food but only a week without water, so cutting off water is even more critical than cutting off food — wipe sinks dry and eliminate standing water.
Environmental cleaning
- Clean cabinets regularly; do not overfill them; leave space for ventilation.
- Keep areas under sinks dry; check for leaks.
- Remove food debris from stove gaps promptly.
- Clean behind and under refrigerators regularly — these areas are warm and hidden.
- Scrub grease from wall and floor cracks with a small brush.
Preventive insecticide use
- Spray a small amount of dinotefuran-containing household insecticide in cabinet bottoms and sink crevices as prevention.
- Also spray behind refrigerators and microwaves; cockroaches that approach will be affected.
- Be especially careful when using insecticides in the kitchen; avoid utensil and food storage areas.
- Wait for the spray to dry completely before returning items and using the kitchen normally.
Seal gaps
Check the joint between the stove and the wall, and pipe penetrations through walls; fill any gaps with caulk to reduce cockroach hiding places and travel routes.
