How to Prevent Silverfish in Bathrooms
Where Do Silverfish Hide and Breed?
Silverfish love dark, humid hiding spots with available food. They stay hidden during the day and come out at night. Here are their most common hiding places:
- Bookcases and Bookshelves (Most Concentrated)
Bookcases offer silverfish abundant food — book spine glue, binding thread, paper fibers. They hide in:
- The gaps between books.
- The space between the book spine and cover.
- Long-untouched stacks of old books.
- Cracks in the bookcase back and side panels.
- Wardrobes and Storage Cabinets
Starch sizing and sweat residue on clothes are silverfish food. They hide in:
- Under folded clothes on the bottom shelf.
- Gaps in wardrobe back and side panels.
- The space under drawer bottoms.
- Out-of-season clothes and paper boxes left undisturbed for months.
- Baseboards and Floor Cracks
Silverfish's flat bodies let them squeeze into extremely narrow gaps:
- Seams between hardwood floorboards.
- Gaps where baseboards have come loose.
- The junction between the floor and wall.
- Bathrooms and Toilets
Silverfish love moisture-heavy areas:
- Under and behind bathroom vanities.
- Around pipe penetrations under the sink.
- Gaps where wall tiles have come loose.
- Piles of damp towels and bath mats.
- Under the Kitchen Sink
Warm temperatures and food crumbs:
- Bottom corners of the sink cabinet.
- Cracks around pipe penetrations.
- Wall corners near the trash bin.
How to Inspect?
Shine a flashlight into these dead corners. At night, turn off the lights, wait 10-15 minutes, then suddenly turn them back on — silverfish come out at night and won't have time to hide, making them easy to spot. Also look for silverfish signs: pale yellowish stains on walls or floors, tiny black fecal pellets, and shed silvery-gray skins. These indicate silverfish activity in that area.
