How to prevent flea recurrence?
After fleas have been completely eliminated, preventive measures are essential to prevent their return. Fleas develop from egg to adult in just 14-21 days, so a lapse in attention can lead to another outbreak.
Daily cleaning habits
- Vacuum floor cracks and carpets weekly; replace vacuum bags promptly — don't wait until they are full.
- Wash pet bedding in water above 60°C and tumble dry on high heat at least once a month.
- Change and wash sheets and pillowcases frequently (weekly) to keep the bedroom clean.
- Reduce clutter to eliminate flea hiding places, especially cardboard boxes and piles of old clothes.
- Vacuuming not only cleans but also stimulates remaining pupae to hatch early, preventing long-term dormancy.
Environmental control
- Keep indoor areas dry; maintain humidity below 50% — flea egg development rates are very low in dry environments.
- Use exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchens; ventilate promptly after bathing.
- Open windows regularly to reduce indoor humidity.
- Using a dehumidifier is highly effective for humidity control.
Pet protection
- Use veterinarian-recommended flea preventives (topical or oral) regularly on pets, even in winter.
- After pets return from outdoors, use a flea comb to check for fleas or flea feces (black specks).
- Regularly spray dinotefuran-containing household insecticide on pet bedding and activity areas.
- Do not bring stray animals into the house, as they may introduce fleas.
Establish a protective barrier
- Regularly spray dinotefuran-containing household insecticide at doorways, window sills, and balcony entrances.
- Create a protective film barrier; any fleas entering from outside will be poisoned.
- Reapply every 2-4 weeks to maintain continuous effectiveness.
- For ground-floor homes or those with yards, spray along the base of fences to prevent fleas from stray cats and rats from entering.
Special precautions
- Before bringing second-hand carpets, used sofas, or used mattresses indoors, thoroughly inspect and spray with dinotefuran-containing insecticide outdoors; only bring them in after confirming they are flea-free.
- If the previous tenant had pets, do a comprehensive flea preventive treatment before moving in.
- For long-vacant rooms, vacuum and spray before use, as flea pupae may have been dormant during the vacancy.
