Why do springtails suddenly appear in large numbers?

Springtail numbers are directly linked to indoor humidity. They may hide in crevices unnoticed under normal conditions, but when conditions are right, they can appear overnight in large numbers.

Humidity determines numbers

  • When numbers are low, springtails hide in tile gaps and baseboard crevices, almost invisible.
  • During prolonged rainy weather or when the house becomes damp, humidity rises.
  • Mold and humus increase rapidly, providing abundant food.
  • Under damp conditions, springtails' breeding cycle shortens, and numbers explode within days.
  • So they seem to "suddenly" appear — actually triggered by environmental changes.

Collective jumping behavior

  • Springtails have a jumping organ (furcula) on their abdomen; when disturbed, they jump collectively.
  • When you swat or step near them, they burst apart, jumping several centimeters.
  • This looks alarming, but it is simply an instinctive escape response to predators.

What does this indicate?

A sudden springtail explosion is not coincidental — it is a clear signal that humidity levels are too high. It is telling you: somewhere in the house is too damp; it is time to dehumidify.

What to do?

  1. Immediately open windows or turn on a dehumidifier to reduce humidity.
  2. Thoroughly check for leaks and find the moisture source.
  3. Vacuum up springtails and debris from infested areas.
  4. Spray dinotefuran-containing household insecticide on corners and floor gaps to kill remaining springtails.
  5. Maintain dryness long-term to prevent recurrence.
