When are biting midges most active?

Biting midges have distinct daily and seasonal activity patterns. Understanding these patterns helps with precise control.

Daily activity periods

  1. Dawn — 1-2 hours around sunrise is the first peak activity period; they emerge in groups to feed.
  2. Dusk — around sunset is the second peak; this is when they are most active.
  3. Daytime — some species (e.g., *Leptoconops*) are also active during the day, especially on cloudy days.
  4. Night — most midge species rest at night and are inactive.

Seasonal patterns

  • Midges are most active in summer (June-September), breeding fastest at 25-30°C with humidity above 70%.
  • Activity decreases in spring and autumn; they are mostly inactive in winter.
  • In warm, damp indoor environments, however, midges may breed year-round without interruption.

Targeted control strategies

  • Keep windows tightly screened during peak activity periods (dawn and dusk).
  • At dusk, spray dinotefuran-containing household insecticide on balconies and window sills in advance — mass killing is most effective when they are active.
  • Increase indoor dehumidification in summer to avoid damp conditions.
  • If ventilation is needed at dusk, install fine-mesh screens (40 mesh or finer) — ordinary screens cannot block midges.
  • Avoid outdoor activities during dawn and dusk peak periods.
