How to eliminate sowbugs?
How to eliminate sowbugs?
The key to eliminating sowbugs is addressing damp environments and clearing hiding places. Sowbugs cannot survive without moisture; drying out the environment will naturally make them disappear.
Clear hiding places (symptomatic relief)
Sowbugs hide in dark, damp crevices during the day. Clearing these areas leaves them nowhere to hide:
- Remove dead leaves, debris, and old cardboard boxes piled up in corners.
- Clear fallen leaves and debris under plant pots; do not place pots directly on the ground.
- Move piles of bricks and firewood away from the wall.
- Seal gaps around doors and windows with silicone caulk or filler.
Chemical control
After environmental cleaning, use household hygiene insecticide spray containing bifenthrin to kill remaining sowbugs:
- Spray along corners, door gaps, around drainpipes, and along baseboards.
- Sowbugs that crawl over the treated surface at night will die.
- The residue lasts 2-4 weeks and is safe for humans and pets.
- If you see sowbugs indoors, you can simply vacuum them up.
Outdoor treatment—preventing entry from outside
- Clear weeds and fallen leaves along the foundation.
- Turn over and dry damp soil near the walls to reduce their habitat.
- Apply a band of bifenthrin-containing spray along the outdoor foundation to create a barrier.
- An outdoor barrier greatly reduces the number of sowbugs crawling indoors.
Dehumidification (fundamental solution)
- Keep bathrooms and kitchens dry and well-ventilated; run exhaust fans after showers.
- Repair leaky pipes to eliminate water sources.
- Use a dehumidifier to reduce indoor humidity.
- Once the dampness issue is resolved, sowbugs will naturally disappear.
