(Tobacco beetle, Warehouse beetle, Herbarium beetle)*Lasioderma serricorne*
How They Get In
- Purchased tea, herbs, and dry goods carry eggs invisible to the naked eye.
- Snacks and spices carry beetle sources from bulk storage.
- Residual populations in cabinet crevices re-emerge under favorable conditions.
- Beetle sources in hallways and common storage spread into units.
How to Get Rid of Them
- Pre-Treatment: Inspect all tea, herbs, dry goods, and dried fruits. Discard infested items. Transfer sound items to sealed glass or metal containers. Vacuum cabinet interiors.;
- Key Zones: Herb and tea cabinet joints, snack drawer corners, storage corners, cabinet-wall gaps.;
- Application: Spray joints in lines. Never on food or herbs.;
- Post-Treatment: Close 1-2 hours, ventilate 1+ hour. Freeze new tea and herbs at -18 C for 72 hours.;
- Prevention: Seal tea and herbs in glass/metal. Buy small quantities. Inspect monthly.
Prevention & Follow-Up
Seal tea, medicinal herbs, and dried fruit in glass or metal containers right after purchase. Freeze high-value tea and herbs for 72 hours to kill any eggs they may carry. Check and clean cabinets and storage areas regularly — if you spot signs of beetle damage, isolate and treat the affected items immediately. Keep storage cabinets dry and well-ventilated to avoid the humid conditions that help them breed. Buy in small amounts and restock more often to shorten storage time.
