Grain Borers Control & Removal Guide
(Lesser grain borer, Australian wheat weevil)*Rhyzopertha dominica*
How They Get In
- Bulk rice carries eggs; infested grain looks identical to sound grain.
- Old wood rice bins harbor persistent populations.
- Transport packaging carries borers.
- Poorly sealed cabinets allow spread.
How to Get Rid of Them
- Pre-Treatment: Discard heavily infested grain. Transfer sound grain to sealed containers. Vacuum cabinet interiors.;
- Key Zones: Wood container bore holes, storage corners, cabinet-wall gaps, baseboards.;
- Application: Pressure spot-spray into wood bore holes. Never on grain.;
- Post-Treatment: Close 2-3 hours, ventilate. Replace old wood containers with sealed plastic/glass.;
- Prevention: Seal all grain, freeze new purchases, inspect monthly.
Prevention & Follow-Up
Store grains in well-sealed containers. Replace old wooden rice bins with airtight plastic or glass containers. Keep grain storage areas dry and well-ventilated, and regularly clean broken kernels and dust off your shelves. Buy grains in small amounts and restock often to shorten storage time. Freeze newly bought grains for 48 hours to kill any eggs they may carry. Check your pantry shelves and any wooden storage bins regularly — if you find boreholes, replace the affected container right away.
