Termites Control & Removal Guide

(Subterranean termite, Drywood termite, Swarmers)

*Coptotermes formosanus* / *Reticulitermes flaviceps*

How They Get In

  1. Soil-to-wood contact: wood structures touching soil provide concealed entry.;
  2. Foundation cracks as narrow as 0.4mm are big enough for entry.;
  3. Swarming: winged reproductives enter through doors, windows, and attic vents in spring. Shed wings on windowsills are a classic sign.;
  4. Firewood, mulch, and lumber stored against foundations attract termites.

How to Get Rid of Them

  1. Professional Inspection: Termite control is NOT a DIY project. Contact a licensed professional immediately if you suspect termites. Do not disturb mud tubes or frass before inspection.;
  2. Soil Treatment: Professionals apply liquid termiticides around the foundation to create a continuous chemical barrier — the most common treatment.;
  3. Baiting Systems: In-ground stations with slow-acting growth regulators eliminate colonies over weeks to months.;
  4. Direct Wood Treatment: Localized injection or, for extensive drywood infestations, whole-structure fumigation.;
  5. Prevention: Eliminate wood-to-soil contact. Keep mulch and firewood 30cm from foundations. Fix all leaks promptly. Schedule annual professional inspections.

Prevention & Follow-Up

Keep soil and mulch at least 15 cm (6 inches) away from the foundation. Fix all leaks promptly — termites need moisture. Store firewood away from the house and off the ground. Have annual professional termite inspections. Ensure crawl spaces are well-ventilated.
