How to Use Airtight Storage to Prevent Grain Borers?
How to Seal and Store Grain to Prevent Lesser Grain Borers?
Airtight storage is the most effective way to prevent lesser grain borers. The adults can fly and the larvae can crawl, but if your seal is solid, they simply can't get in.
Choose the Right Storage Container
Recommended Containers (ranked from best to acceptable):
- Glass airtight jars — transparent so you can see the grain condition, excellent seal, easy to clean. Top choice.
- Food-grade plastic airtight containers — lightweight, shatter-resistant; those with silicone gasket seals are even better
- Vacuum-sealed bags — after vacuum-sealing, all air is excluded and lesser grain borers can't survive
- Metal airtight canisters — decent pest protection, but opaque so harder to check contents
Not Recommended:
- Plastic shopping bags tied shut — lesser grain borers can chew through; they can squeeze out even if the bag is knotted
- Open rice buckets — no sealing function at all
- Cardboard boxes — lesser grain borers can easily chew through
- Cloth rice sacks — completely incapable of stopping them
Proper Sealed Storage Method
Step 1: Inspect the Container
Before use, check for cracks or damage. For glass jars, check that the gasket hasn't deteriorated.
Step 2: Pre-Treat the Grain
With newly purchased grain, no matter how clean it looks:
- Freeze at -18°C (0°F) for 48 hours first (kills any hidden eggs)
- Then transfer to containers and seal
Step 3: Fill the Container
- Fill as full as possible to minimize air inside
- Close the lid tightly; make sure the seal is snug
Step 4: Label with Dates
Write the purchase date and sealing date on the container. This helps you keep track of freshness.
Step 5: Storage Location
- Place in a cool, dry spot away from direct sunlight
- Keep away from sinks, stoves, and other damp heat sources
- Don't place directly on the floor
Daily Habits
- Close the lid tightly every time you scoop out grain
- Keep the scoop clean and dry
- Regularly check container seal integrity
- Replace gaskets promptly if they show signs of aging
Extra Sealing for Bagged Grain
If you don't want to switch containers, you can reinforce the original packaging:
- Fold the bag opening over and clamp it tightly with a clip
- Place the whole bag inside an additional sealed bag
- Or put the entire bag into an airtight storage box
