How to eliminate lesser grain borers from the home?

Eliminating lesser grain borers requires more thoroughness than for other stored-grain pests, as they are more destructive and reproduce faster.

Step 1: Comprehensive inspection

Remove all stored grains from cabinets and check each item:

  • Rice, millet, other grains.
  • Flour, noodles.
  • Dried fruits, nuts.
  • Chinese medicinal herbs, dried goods.
  • Pet food.

Seal any infested grain and discard it. Even if infested grain looks edible, its quality is already severely compromised.

Step 2: Sieving

If the grain is still salvageable (light infestation):

  • Use a fine sieve to remove adults, larvae, and empty shells.
  • Spread the grain out and pick out infested kernels.
  • Then freeze (-18°C for 48 hours).
  • Or sun-dry for several days.

Step 3: Thorough cabinet cleaning

  1. Empty all containers, rinse with hot water, and dry.
  2. Vacuum all dust and debris from cabinets.
  3. Use a brush for corners and crevices.
  4. Wipe interiors with a damp cloth.
  5. Allow to dry completely.

Step 4: Chemical treatment

Apply food-grade diatomaceous earth to the following areas:

  • Interior walls and shelf seams.
  • Inside cabinet doors and edges.
  • Baseboards and wall corners.
  • Crevices in wooden rice bins.

After application, leave cabinet doors open for ventilation until dry.

Step 5: Airtight storage

Return treated grains to the cabinets:

  • Must be stored in airtight jars or sealed bags.
  • Freeze new purchases before sealing.
  • Ensure all containers have good seals.

Step 6: Regular inspection

Check monthly after treatment. If any stray adults are found, reapply the powder immediately.
