How to use food-grade diatomaceous earth to control grain borers?

After finding grain borers, food-grade diatomaceous earth is a safe and effective physical control method. Diatomaceous earth is a natural mineral powder that works by physically abrading the insect's waxy cuticle, causing dehydration and death. It contains no chemicals and is suitable for use in food storage areas.

Why does diatomaceous earth work against grain borers?

The microscopic particles of diatomaceous earth have sharp edges. When adult and larval grain borers crawl over it, their protective waxy layer is scratched, causing continuous water loss and eventual death from dehydration. This is purely physical action, and grain borers cannot develop resistance. Important: use food-grade diatomaceous earth; industrial grade is not suitable for household use.

Usage steps

Step 1: Empty and clean

  • Remove all grains and dry goods from cabinets.
  • Discard infested grains in sealed bags.
  • Vacuum the cabinet interior thoroughly, especially corners and shelf seams.

Step 2: Apply diatomaceous earth

Using a dry powder puff or small brush, lightly dust a thin layer of food-grade diatomaceous earth in the following areas:

  • Cabinet shelf surfaces and corners.
  • Back panel seams.
  • Drawer bottoms.
  • Baseboards under cabinets.
  • Do not apply too thickly; a thin layer is sufficient.

Step 3: Store grains in airtight containers

  • Place uninfested grains into airtight containers (glass jars, sealed plastic boxes).
  • Ensure grains are dry before sealing.
  • Return sealed containers to the cabinets.

Step 4: Keep dry

  • Diatomaceous earth remains effective in dry environments.
  • If it gets damp, it will clump and lose effectiveness; vacuum it up and reapply after drying.

Frequency of application

  • Do a thorough application after cleaning.
  • The powder itself does not degrade, but it may be covered by dust or washed away; replace if necessary.
  • If grain borers reappear, vacuum the old powder and reapply.

Integrated control

Diatomaceous earth is only an auxiliary measure. True prevention relies on:

  • Airtight storage of all dry goods—this is the core measure.
  • Keeping kitchens and storage areas dry.
  • Reducing stockpiling; buy in small quantities more frequently.
  • Regular inspection of stored grains.
